The Deadly Cost of Illegal Immigration

On October, 9th 2006 at 9PM Amy Kortlang was killed by a drunk driver. That sounds like an accident that happens every day in the United States. The problem was that it was no accident. It was the foreseeable outcome of the actions of the driver, the federal, state and local government officials and businesses that decide that their profits are more important than obeying the law.

Rafael Ramirez Perez had been arrested for drunk driving four times before was finally deported. He decided to come back into the United States for work. The first drunk driving conviction he was given no time in jail and immigration department was not informed. His second driving conviction he was given 12 days in jail and immigration department was not informed. His third driving conviction he was given 12 days in jail and immigration department was not informed. His fourth driving conviction he was given 1 year in jail and immigration department deported him. On his fifth conviction he was given 21 years to life in prison and immigration department will not file additional charges against him for being in the country illegally. They must be too busy not enforcing the immigration laws.

Every time Rafael Ramirez Perez came back to the United States he got a job from employers that should have followed the law. His final employer MK Concrete gave him a truck to drive without even checking to see if he had a valid driver’s license. The owner of MK concrete lives on 13 acres overlooking a valley. He has blood on his hands that will never get washed off. I hope that he enjoys his mansion. Were the extra profits worth someone life?

Melanie Kortlang Amy’s mother is in Washington DC at Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007 and is available for interviews regarding illegal immigration and its deadly cost.
